data charges: a rough guide

Downloading a simple map only uses a tiny amount of data, less than 20kB, costing you about 5p when you travel abroad on pay monthly and 7p on pay as you go.

Navigation routes (ie. turn-by-turn directions) use a bit more data, but still don't cost as much as you might think. To give you an idea of how much data charges might cost when you travel abroad, we've put together some examples.

typical charges

road trip in the countryside - charges

The less detailed the route, the less you pay for turn-by-turn navigation. So if your trip only involves a motorway or two, you’re in luck.

data used for one navigation route typical cost
170kB 51p on pay monthly, and 68p on pay as you go
road trip in the city - charges

City road trips are usually short, so you don't use much data at all.

data used for one navigation route typical cost
78kB 23p on pay monthly, and 31p on pay as you go
city stroll - charges

There’s lots to see on a city stroll. So this time your route will be a bit more detailed, which costs a little more.

data used for one map typical cost
220kB 66p on pay monthly, and 88p on pay as you go
