Jargon guide

Just so we’re talking the same lingo, here’s what we mean by certain words and phrases:

Roaming

When you’re abroad your mobile will connect to an overseas network, but you’ll only be roaming when you use your phone to make or receive a call, send a text or browse the web.

Bundle

A bundle is an additional package you can add to your plan to receive discounts on calls, texts and data.

Data

You use data when you browse the internet on your phone, look at maps, play games online, watch TV on your phone or download anything including apps, music, video or film. You also use data when you send or receive emails on your phone. We charge you for this data in Mega Bytes (MB) – which either comes out of your inclusive allowance or bundle – or you can pay as you consume, but it’ll cost you more.

Megabyte (MB)

Basically this is the unit we use to measure the amount of data (digital information) you consume on your phone (and that we charge you for).

Here’s roughly what you get for your megabytes:

10MB - Enough data to send 10 emails with attachments, or browse the web on your phone for 30 minutes.

30MB - Enough data to send 30 emails with attachments, or browse the web on your phone for 1 ½ hours.

50MB - Enough data to send 50 emails with attachments, or browse the web on your phone for 2 ½ hours.

150MB -Enough data to send 150 emails with attachments, or browse the web on your phone for up to 7 ½ hours.

500MB -Enough data to send 500 emails with attachments, or browse the web on your phone for up to 25 hours.

Wifi

This is when you connect to the internet via a wireless network. You can do this at home when you’re in the UK, at some hotels while you’re away, or at various “hotspots”. We recommend you try to use wifi whenever you can to keep your costs down.

Top tips to keep your costs down

  1. 1Buy a travel bundle to save money on calls, texts and browsing
  2. 2Use free wifi whenever you can
  3. 3Make sure you know how to turn data roaming on and off on your phone
  4. 4Avoid checking your Answer Phone until you’re back home
  5. 5Download an app to help keep track of your data usage. Text APPS to 1200 for a link to apps you can use
